A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING MRS. BEULAH SMITH ON THE CELEBRATION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY.

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beulah Smith, one of four children, was born on February 22, 1899, to the late Olivia Hall and Sam Davenport in Claiborne County, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beulah Smith was raised by her grandmother, LeAnna Grant, who was a slave and died when Beulah was eight years old; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beulah Smith was married to the late Henry Beasley, Sr., and had two children, Johnny Beasley and Henry Beasley, Jr., and was later married to the late Albert Smith; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Beulah Smith filled the days of her life with bountiful labor: working in fields of cotton, corn and peanuts; working as a domestic worker, washing and ironing clothes; working as a supervisor/floor walker in a factory in Chicago; working as a caretaker of an apartment building in Chicago; and working as a housewife and mother; and

WHEREAS, along with her involvement with her church, Mrs. Smith's hobbies include quilting, making soap, canning, gardening and cooking her specialties, fried apple pies and jelly cakes; and

WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Mississippi believes that it is most appropriate to pay special tribute to such a faithful woman as Mrs. Beulah Smith, one who is devoted to her church and family, and one who has been an inspiration to others during her life:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate Mrs. Beulah Smith on the celebration of her 100th birthday, extend to her our heartiest wishes and pray that she will be blessed with peace, happiness and joy.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mrs. Beulah Smith and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
